Richard Atkinson was second son of marine painter George Mounsey Wheatley Atkinson (c.1806-1884) who lived at Cobh (Queenstown), and was Government surveyor of shipping and emigrants there. Like his father, he was a Marine painter representing views of Cork harbour and stormy seas. Richard's two brothers George Mounsey Atkinson and Robert Atkinson and sister Sarah were also painters. However, he died young, aged only twenty-six, in 1882.
