Alice Maher

Alice Maher was born in Cahir, Co. Tipperary. She Studied at NIHE 1974-78 and U.C.C. 1979-80, then at the Crawford School of Art in Cork 1981-85. She attended the MA course in Fine Art at the University of Ulster, 1985-86 and gained the San Francisco Academy of Art Scholarship 1986-87. She was represented in CAN'85 and in 'Eight Artists' at Oxford, 1986. She was an award-winner at the G.P.A. exhibition of Emerging Artists in 1990, and was represented in 'Strongholds', an exhibition of contemporary Irish art, at the Tate Gallery, Liverpool in 1991. She had a one-person exhibition in Belfast in 1987, and in Limerick in 1989. She is a teacher in painting at the Crawford College of Art.

Her work is figurative, having affinities with German Expressionism, distinguished by its themes of childhood and womanhood, and its incisive drawing style.
