Edward Ambrose
1814–90
Irish School

Edward Ambrose was born in Cork in 1814. He went to London, and began to study at the Royal Academy in December 1845. Subsequently he studied in Paris, Rome and Louvain and returned to London in c.1851. He exhibited at the RA that year, and showed Cupid and Psyche (now in the Crawford Gallery) at the Cork Exhibition in 1852. He exhibited two marble pieces Cupid Raising Psyche from the Soporiphic Vision and Psyche discovering Cupid at the RHA in 1858. He showed at the RA in 1864 and at Liverpool, where he received a medal. In London he lived at 101 Stanhope Street, Mornington Crescent, Regent's Park, but in the latter part of his life he returned to Cork. He died in Cork on 29th April, 1890.
